Collaboration and Peer Reviews Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 500 words - 1

Collaboration and Peer Reviews - Essay Example Also, a project can be completed much faster when collaborating because each team member can focus just on what they are good at. Working as an individual requires someone to be involved in every role; group work means that each person can specialize. On the other hand, collaboration on a project means that some people may slack off because they think that others will do the work for them. Some people are just naturally lazy, so being part of a group allows them to receive a grade that they don’t deserve. Another disadvantage to working as a group is that there can be disagreements among group members. A famous saying that shows this is â€Å"too many cooks spoil the broth.† The same can sometimes be true in collaborating on a project—everyone thinks that they know what is best for the group and they try to impose their views on others. No one is willing to compromise and, as a result, the project turns out to be a disaster. By reviewing my peers’ writing, I have been able to get different views on how to write a paper. Everyone has a different style when it comes to writing, so to learn from someone else’s style can benefit my own writing. Of course, some of my peers’ writing may not be up to scratch; this is where I can offer advice and hopefully improve their writing ability. In doing this, I can think through the thought processes that go into writing and I can adapt my style so that I am a better writer in the long term. The good thing about getting my papers reviewed by my peers is that hopefully they will pick up on something that I may have missed. Because they have attended most of the classes with me, they have been taught the same writing principles that I have. Sometimes, another person can catch something that I haven’t because they are reading it with fresh eyes. A negative to having my peers review my papers is that they perhaps do not have a

That’s why nobody can deny the importance of oral health care. According to many statistics insurance companies that play a pivotal role in improving oral health care of the communities, we will focus on the Delta Dental insurance and how growth of the company improved access and overall health status. Delta Dental insurance was established in 1966. Over the years it faces many challenges to expand and increase access of dental care in community. The efforts paid the Delta Dental as widely accepted by community. This paper focuses on challenges Delta Dental had to face to build its pillar in the market. After evolution, Delta Dental insurance exponentially expanded due to its benefits and low primer. Over the years it has made strategies so that many people prefer Delta Dental over other insurances for maximum benefits, which helped improve oral health care. This paper will also highlight some of those strategies. Compare to other dental insurance company, Delta Dental insurance provide wide coverage and offer maximum benefits. This is a unique characteristic of the Delta Dental. We will talk about current structure of the Delta Dental and its future about how to improve oral care delivery of services to clients and enrollees, as well as how it fared compare to its peer insurance companies. Finally, the paper will mention about the future plan of the Delta Dental. History: In order to increase access to oral health care, in 1954, a group of dentists formed a dental service corporation in California, Oregon and Washington. It was lead by Washington Dental Service (WDS), and initiated by providing service to organized labor unions. Later, it expanded its services to all 50 states, the District of Columbia and Puerto Rico. Delta dental is now a fifteen billion dollar a year nationwide group providing dental insurance to 59 million Americans, making it one of the largest non-profits in the country (â€Å"Our Mission History†, n.d.). Washington Dental Service was joined by more local organizations, which then created Delta Dental Plans Association (DDPA) in 1966. Shortly a year after, WDS partnered with the International Association of Machinists, which was the first step into creating a multi-state dental benefits program. There was a growing number of out of state subscribers, and therefore in order to meet their needs WDS worked with other Delta Dental member companies and Blue Cross/Blue Shield Association members, to continue serving its clients. It provided coverage until 1980s this way (â€Å"Our Mission History†, n.d.). The program continued as such until a bid was won by Delta Dental of California being chosen as the dental benefits carrier for the Office of the Civilian Health and Medical Program of the Uniformed Services (OCHAMPUS) program. In order for the administration of this very large account to be centralized, other member companies agreed to share its provider data with Delta Dental of California sharing the administrative income and risk. As a result of this change, the National Provider File (NPF), and the establishment in 1990 of Delta USA — was created, the company responsible for overseeing dentist data and enabling the administration of national business (â€Å"Our Mission History†, n.d.). Currently, there are 39 independent Delta Dental member companies operating in all 50 states, the District of Columbia and Puerto Rico. As one of the largest dental benefits provider DDPA provides coverage to more than 59.5 million people enrolled in more than 97,000 groups. The company was named Dental Care until 1970s and then it officially changed its name to Delta Dental (â€Å"About Us Home†, n.d.). All Delta Dental companies are members, or affiliate of members, of the Delta Dental Plans Association a network of 39 Delta Dental companies throughout the country. Delta Dental companies range from multi-state to single state (â€Å"About Us Home†, n.d.). The multi-state programs consist of the following: * Delta Dental of New Jersey Started in 1969, it provides coverage to over 1.5 million residents of New Jersey and Connecticut (â€Å"Delta Dental of New Jersey†, n.d.). * Delta Dental Plan of Michigan Michigan Dental Service (MDS) was established in 1957, and in 1963 it received its non-profit status. In 1980 MDS expanded to Ohio and Indiana. In early 2006, Delta Dental of Michigan, with its affiliates in Ohio and Indiana, and Tennessee, signed an affiliation agreement under a new nonprofit holding company to strengthen their market positions and increase the number of Americans with dental benefits. In 2009, Delta Dental of Kentucky and Delta Dental of New Mexico affiliated with the family of companies. The newest affiliate, Delta Dental of North Carolina, joined the enterprise in 2010. Currently they cover 8.8 million individuals (â€Å"Delta Dental of Michigan†, n.d.). * Delta Dental of Minnesota It was founded in 1969, and later expanded to North Dakota. It is the largest program in the upper Midwest, serving 7500 Minnesota based on purchasing groups and 3.8 million members nationwide (â€Å"Delta Dental of Minnesota†, n.d.). * Delta Dental of Missouri Delta Dental of Missouri started 50 years ago and has offered dental and vision benefits in the states of Missouri and South Carolina. More than 1,800 companies in Missouri and South Carolina have selected Delta Dental as their dental benefits carrier. The Delta-Vision plan started in 2011 (â€Å"Delta Dental of Missouri†, n.d.). * Dentegra Companies Dentegra is not affiliated with Delta Dental Plans Association. However, this insurance company is authorized by Delta Dental Plans Association to market and underwrites certain national Delta Dental programs. This plan covers 23 million Americans. It serves the states of: Alabama, California, Delaware, District of Columbia, Florida, Georgia, Louisiana, Maryland, Mississippi, Montana, Nevada, New York, Pennsylvania, Puerto Rico, Texas, Utah, Virgin Islands, West Virginia (â€Å"Why do more than†, n.d.). * Hawaii Dental Service Hawaii Dental Service (HDS) is the first and largest nonprofit dental service corporation in Hawaii providing dental benefit plans to more than a half million members. This plan was incorporated on February 15, 1962, and soon 221 licensed dentists became charter members. HDS serves Guam, Hawaii and Northern Mariana Islands (â€Å"Caring, Visionary Dentists From HDS†, n.d.). * Northeast Delta Dental NDD offers the states of Maine, New Hampshire, Vermont, providing quality dental care to millions of residents (â€Å"Northeast Delta Dental†, n.d.). * Oregon Dental Service This plan covers Alaska and Oregon. A research to find affordable dental health by Longshoremens and Warehousemens Union, led them to find Oregon Dental Service in 1955(â€Å"A trailblazer in health†, n.d.). * The single state companies include: Delta Dental of Arizona that started in 1972. Delta Dental of Arkansas, Delta Dental of Colorado began in 1958. Delta Dental of Idaho, Delta Dental of Illinois, Delta Dental of Iowa, Delta Dental of Kansas, Delta Dental of Massachusetts, Delta Dental of Nebraska, Delta Dental of Oklahoma, Delta Dental of Rhode Island, Delta Dental of South Dakota, Washington Dental Service, Delta Dental of Wisconsin, Delta Dental of Wyoming (â€Å"Delta Dental: Members†, n.d.). Delta Dental Plans: Delta Dental offers various plans for individuals, families and enrollees. There are 39 member companies of Delta Dental and each of them provides a variety of dental benefits programs. It also forms contacts with small and large business companies to provide dental insurance coverage for their employees (â€Å"Products and Plans†, n.d.). The various plans offered are the following: 1. Delta Dental Premier ®: This is their traditional fee-for-service plan with largest dentist network with more than four out of five nation’s dentist participating (â€Å"Delta Dental Premier ®Ã¢â‚¬ , n.d., p. 2). It allows patients to get treated by any licensed dentist and also can change dentists at any time without notifying Delta Dental. The main attraction for this plan is that you do not have to pay more than the co-insurance percentage specified by your coverage (â€Å"Delta Dental’s plans†, n.d.). The participating dentists agree to accept pre-negotiated fees and are prohibited from billing more. 2. Delta Dental PPOâ„  : This is a mid-priced fee-for-service plan with the secondary largest dentist network. It has an option to get treated by any dentists and still have lower out-of-pocket costs because the dentists in this network have agreed to do so (â€Å"Delta Dental’s plans†, n.d.). It also has a Delta Dental PPO plus Premier plan which includes all the benefits of Delta Dental PPO and also allows for a patient to see a Delta Dental Premier dentist with benefits of that dentist’s contracted fee (â€Å" Delta Dental PPOâ„   †, n.d.). 3. DeltaCare ® USA: It is a HMO-type prepaid plan with a large network of participating dentists. You must select a dentist from their network for this plan. The main features are there is no annual deductibles, no maximums for covered benefits and set copayments (â€Å"Delta Dental’s plans†, n.d .). 4. Delta Dental Individual and Family: Individual and its family can get the same quality dental benefits as provided by the employers under this plan. Delta Dental offers different plans in different states (â€Å"Delta Dental Individual and Family†, n.d.). 5. Delta Dental Legion ®: It is also known as TRICARE Retiree Dental Program. â€Å"The first and only dental benefits plan created by Congress especially for Uniformed Services retirees and their family members and administered by Delta Dental of California.†(â€Å"TRICARE Retiree Dental Program†, n.d.). 6. Delta Dental Patient Direct ®: It is a dental discount plan for individual, families and groups that do not have dental benefits. The patients choose dentists from the network and pay them directly with the discount price at the time of their treatment. No paper work is required and it is available in the selected markets only (â€Å"Delta Dental Patient Direct ®Ã¢â‚¬ , n.d.). 7. DeltaVision ®: This is vision benefit plan, which is offered in the selected markets only. It includes various pre-negotiated pricing eye-care services, such as professional eye exams, eyewear, contact lenses and laser vision correction (â€Å"DeltaVision ®Ã¢â‚¬ , n.d.). 8. Delta Dental Member Companies: â€Å"They serve nearly one-third of the estimated 173 million Americans with Dental insurance, providing dental insurance coverage to more than 54 million people in more than 93,000 groups across the nation.†(â€Å"Delta Dental Member Companies†, n.d.). There are other plans which are available in few selected populations and states like the American Association of Retired Persons (AARP) Dental Insurance Plan which is exclusively for AARP members and the Costco Group Dental Plan for the Individuals and Families, which is available only in California (â€Å"Delta Dental’s plans, n.d.). Strengths and weaknesses (especially with healthcare delivery point of view): Delta Dental is the largest dental care carrier in the United States, and they provide coverage to more than 59.5 million people enrolled in more than 97,000 groups. The strengths are obviously regarding to the high level access of the dental care. Many years ago, most of people lost their teeth by middle age, but now many Americans have very good oral health because of the various Delta Dental Plans. They may keep their teeth throughout the lifetime. There are some strengths of Delta Dental according to a recent study (â€Å"Delta Dental by the Numbers†, n.d.): * Delta Dental’s nationwide dentist networks offer unprecedented access: * Delta Dental Premier ® offers the largest network of dentists in the country — encompassing more than 142,000 dentists and more than 251,000 office locations. * Delta Dental PPOSM has a national network of more than 83,900 dentists practicing in more than 168,000 locations. * DeltaCare ® USA provides more than 39,800 dentist office locations. * Delta Dentals PPO Plan delivers the industrys best effective discount — averaging 19 percent nationally — resulting in nearly $3 billion in annual savings compared to dentists average charges. * Delta Dental posted approximately $17 billion in premium revenue during fiscal year 2011, our 32nd consecutive year of financial gains. * Delta Dental’s unique cost-control measures and contractual agreements with dentists help to ensure quality care at moderate fees, collectively saving subscribers with group dental coverage more than $9.0 billion in 2011. * In 2011, Delta Dental member companies processed more than 90 million dental claims or approximately 1.7 million every week, with an accuracy rate of 99.7 percent. Delta Dental focuses on the practice sharing, best services, perfo rmance guarantees, brand name recognition and reputation, whereas, it still have weaknesses such as geographic limitations, innovative practices. Through the numbers above, people might think that we have more and more dentists in large networks so that we would get easy access to dental care, but how do these dentists located? Low-income patients still feel hard to get access to meet one dentist regularly due to the inconvenient transportation, difficulties on appointments, and so on. The president and CEO of Delta Dental, Radine (2011) wrote on â€Å"Annual Report 2011†, â€Å"Delta Dental takes pride in being a single-line carrier with unparalleled expertise in dental benefits, our specialty.† Indeed, they against larger, multi-line insurance companies, and they use competitive strategies to survive during the worst of the economic downturn. However, this kind of single-line model can also be a weakness of dental health care, because coordination of dentists needed to reinforce to increase the quality of companies health care performance. Single-line service may hinder such coordination in between the large dentist network, although they meet the needs for restraining the continuous increased costs. As each program have dissimilar strengths and weaknesses and according to Access to Dental Care/Oral Health Care (American Dental Association, 2012), there are still barriers to getting oral health care: * The dental sections in Medicaid and the State Childrens Health Insurance Programs (SCHIP), which are supposed to provide health care to disadvantaged Americans, rarely have enough money budgeted to do so. Federal law requires that Medicaid cover basic dental services. But many state programs fail to deliver care to even half of their eligible children. * Adult dental coverage through public health programs is even worse; many states simply dont provide it. Its not just about the money. Patients covered under public programs still face hurdles, such as transportation to dental appointments and the difficulty of missing work to keep the appointments. Taking care of ourselves is the key to good oral health, and too many Americans lack a basic understanding of how to brush, floss, eat a healthy diet and drink water with fluoride in it. * About one-third of public water systems are not fluoridated, even though that is the single most effective public health measure to protect against tooth decay. And also, people need to treat what form of coverage they require most and make sure the selected plan provides a low price for the needed processes. Comparison of Delta Dental with all other dental insurances: There are many essential things to keep in mind when deciding on a dental insurance plan, such as prices and co-payment options, local dentist availability, actual coverage, whether it meets your needs and more (â€Å"Dental Insurance Review†, n.d.). Delta Dental Insurance ranking at number three after United Concordia and Ameritas Group Dental is one of the top ten insurance plans in the United States (â€Å"2013 Dental Insurance Comparison†, n.d.). As one of the largest dental coverage plans, founded by dentists, it creates dental coverage plans based on current research and designed to keep people their healthiest and most productive (â€Å"Choosing the Right Dental Plan†, n.d.). Delta Dental Insurance pursues their mission by increasing access to benefits, offering the largest national network of dentists, adding innovative new plan features, aggressively working to keep costs down, and supporting p hilanthropic programs that encourage better overall oral health. Delta Dental Insurance plans offer top of the line features and programs to make insurance services more accessible and convenient for its members. Some of the features that Delta Dental Insurance consists are secure and accessible sites for online enrollment, finding dentists and getting information about available plans. It offers Group/Employer plans, which is important as it gives companies information on the cost of getting dental insurance for their employees. This is important as well for families who wish to enroll other members of the family into the insurance plan. Also Delta Dental Insurance offers individual plans, provides up-front cost information for customers and has Better Business Bureau (BBB) accreditation (â€Å"Dental Insurance Review†, n.d.). Better Business Bureau accreditation is definitely a plus, because they provide ratings based on customer service and satisfaction of members. In addition, Delta Dental Insurance offers multiple types of different plans for its consumers. There is Delta Dental Preferred Provider Organization (PPO), DeltaCare ® USA (Health Maintenance Organization (HMO) option), Fee-for-Service (FFS) Plan, and they also used to offer Discount Plans. But the Discounted Plans are no longer offered by Delta Dental since majority of the members prefer PPO, HMO and FFS plans. The Delta Dental PPO plan is offered worldwide, and for that reason it is more accessible even if the customer relocates (â€Å"Choosing between a PPO and HMO†, n.d.). When choosing a PPO dentist, the out of-pocket costs of customers are often lower because PPO dentists have agreed to charge Delta Dental PPO patients reduced fees. The plan also pays enhanced benefits when patients visit a PPO dentist, so they pay only 20 percent of the PPO dentists contracted fee after their deductible for such services as fillings, oral surgery, root canals and treatment of gum disease in addition to other benefit enhancements (â€Å"Types of Dental Plans†, n.d.). Delta Dental PPO does not cover teeth bleaching and other cosmetic procedures (â€Å"University of California†, 2009). The good thing about a PPO plan is that customers have the freedom to choose any licensed dentist, anywhere in the world, each time the member or a family member requires treatment. And there is no referral required for specialty care. On the other hand, DeltaCare ® USA (HMO option) customers must be residents of California to enroll. It provides individuals and their families with inclusive plans and easy referrals to specialists and even has a benefit for teeth bleaching. The plan emphasizes preventive care; so many services are provided at no cost. There is no annual plan maximum for DeltaCare ® USA (â€Å"Types of Dental Plans†, n.d.). As an HMO member, customers are assigned to network dentist that accept the plans and they must be referred specialist by their assigned dentists. Fee-for-service plans, also known as indemnity or traditional plans, typically offer the greatest choice of dentists. It is up to the customer what dentist to choose or procedure they would like to purchase. Like PPO plans, when you visit a network dentist, you typically pay a certain percentage for each service (called coinsurance) and the plan pays the rest. The percentage usually varies by the type of coverage, such as diagnostic and preventive, major services, etc. (â€Å"Types of Dental Plans†, n.d.). However with FFS plan the member might pay a little extra than the PPO plan. And finally, the Discounted Plans are insurance plans that are offered at reduced rates. There is generally no paperwork, annual limits or deductibles, but you must visit a participating dentist to receive the discount. Also, you may be responsible for a greater portion of the treatment cost compare to PPO or HMO plan. The downside of this plan was the fact that there was a possibility of the dentists being changed annually, and new dentists would be assigned to the customers. But on the plus side, the rates that the customers would receive would be unbeatable. Figure 1 shows the continued growth in enrolment throughout the recession. This also proves that Delta Dental is the largest dental carrier in the United States and it has more than 26 million enrollees at present (â€Å"Delta Dental: Annual Report2011†, n.d., p. 10). Figure 1: Shows the increase in the enrollment of Delta Dental plans by the population. The Y-axis shows the number of enrollees in increasing order and the X-axis shows the years starting from 2008-2012. Adapted from: â€Å"Delta Dental: Annual Report 2011.† (n.d., p. 10). Why is Delta Dental better and more successful than other insurances? Delta Dental offers some of the best dental insurance plans in the United States and around the world since 1954 and as the first company exclusively specializing in dental benefits, Delta Dental has been working hard to improve oral health around the world by providing access to the largest network of dentists, great service, top of the line care plans and developing relationships that emphasize prevention and positive oral health care results over the long term (Delta Dental, 2010). Over 56 million enrollees trust Delta Dental Insurance plans with their oral health and the numbers of satisfied members keep growing (â€Å"Why do more than†, n.d.). â€Å"In 2011, the vast majority of surveyed enrollees from our open network plans said they would recommend Delta Dental to a family or friend. That loyalty is also evident in our exceptionally high enrollee retention rate.† (â€Å"Delta Dental 2011 Annual Report†, n.d., p. 11). Figure 2 which is adapted from the â€Å"Delta Dental: Annual Report 2011† (n.d., p. 11) shows the percentage of enrollee satisfaction and enrollee retention in 2011. Figure 2: The percentage of Enrollee satisfaction and Enrollee Retention. 95% of the Enrollees were satisfied with their Delta Dental Plan and 99% of the Enrollees retained their Delta Dental plan. Adapted from: â€Å"Delta Dental: Annual Report 2011† (n.d., p. 11) Future plans: Delta dental has proven itself as one of the good companies in the market but still they are working diligently to make it better. Delta Dental supports projects in conjunction with major universities and other leading research organizations that are designed to advance scientific knowledge and improve health. Among the projects, recently supports are: a study on the potential for dentists to play a greater role in the detection of health conditions such as diabetes; the cost impact of oral cancer; the application of salivary diagnostics to dentistry; and the development of biotechnology to advance health (Carruth, 2012). All these are the major projects of Delta Dental. Delta Dental is trying to identify ways to improve offerings in ways that will reduce costs while still covering the treatment our subscribers need to stay healthy. Delta Dental will focus on expanding their network in remote places and provide oral care. They are planning continue creating dynamic product lines that provide effective benefits to improve oral health–and overall health – while reducing costs. Delta Dental would concentrate on providing good customer service staff as well as an automated phone line for inquiries. Conclusion: Delta Dental has received many awards in improving oral health care. Their current plans are focused on expanding their network and providing good care for the patients. Delta Dental’s strategies are such that not only patients but also dentist and employees are benefitted. They also focus on many researches to improve quality of care. Moreover, their future plans are focus on reducing cost and providing quality of care for patients. They are providing funds for incurable diseases like cancer and other malignancy. Customer Relationship Management At Dell

Customer Relationship Management At Dell Introduction Customer Relationship Management (CRM), as defined by Anderson and Narus, is the bundling of customer strategy and processes, supported by relevant software, for the purpose of improving customer loyalty and, eventually, corporate profitability. Consultants Rigby, Reichheld and Schefter have mentioned the imperatives of CRM as acquiring the right customer, crafting the right value proposition, instituting the best processes, motivating employees, and learning to retain customers. This can be substantiated by studying the particular case of Dell, which has used internet and other direct media to develop an efficient model of CRM. This report will bring out the details of CRM process followed by Dell, and how it has helped in sustaining loyal customers and build customer satisfaction. About Dell Dell is a leading technology company which offers a broad range of product categories, including mobility products, desktop PCs, software and peripherals, servers and networking, services, and storage. As per a Gartner research report based on second quarter PC shipments in 2009, it is the number one supplier (26.0% market share in US) of computer systems in the United States and the number two supplier worldwide (13.6% global market share). The mission statement for Dell is to be the most successful computer company in the world at delivering the best customer experience. Since Dell is a global wide company, its direct approach is relevant across product lines, regions and customer segments.  [1]   Dell is organized geographically into the Americas, Asia-Pacific and Japan, and Europe. The corporate headquarters is located in Round Rock, Texas, near Austin. In the mid-1990s, the company decided that in order to manage a company that was growing at 50% a year, it needed to decentralize decision making rather than try to control everything from the U.S. Therefore, each of the regions has its own regional headquarters (Japan has a separate headquarters), its own manufacturing facilities, and its own IT infrastructure. Ongoing Customer Relationship Management at DELL Monitoring, Evaluating and Reassigning Accounts Dells business activities are organized in each region around different customer segments. These generally include (1) relationship (large corporate) customers, (2) home and small business (sometimes called transaction customers), and (3) public sector (government and educational) customers. This segmentation is evident in Dells product mix, which has different product lines for each segment, in its marketing strategies, which vary by business segments, and in its e-commerce and Internet strategies. For instance, services such as Premier.Dell.com extranets are geared toward large relationship customers, while a more limited set of online services is offered to home and small business customers on Dell.com. For large enterprise customers, Dell maintains a field sales force all over the world. There are dedicated account teams, including field-based system engineers and consultants, which form long-term relationships to create a single source of assistance for their largest customers, develop custom solutions for them and get important customer feedback. There are several programs to provide single points of contact and accountability with global account specialists, special global pricing and consistent global service and support programs. There are separate sales and marketing programs aimed at federal, state and local government agencies, and specific healthcare and educational customers. For small and medium businesses and consumers, marketing is done primarily by advertising on television and the Internet, print media and mailing a wide range of direct marketing publications such as promotional materials, catalogs and customer newsletters. Relationship and public sector customers account for about 54% of Dells revenues overall. All these accounts are initially serviced by field-based sales representatives along with a support team of telephone service reps dedicated to these accounts. Small businesses and consumers are served by several thousand phone reps who can look up historical sales records to help the customers in ordering systems that match their prior purchase pattern. Figure 1: Dells four customer aligned business units  [2]   Dells CRM Applications The Internet and e-commerce are fundamental to Dells business, as expected from a company that defines itself as an Internet infrastructure company. The e-commerce has been adopted into the core of the business in three ways: 1) in its relationships with end customers, (2) in coordinating its value web, and (3) in communicating its market message to emphasize its ability to provide e-commerce solutions to its customers. As per Anderson and Narus, some of the emerging applications of CRM, (that we can also observe in Dell) are in: Customer acquisition, retention and growth Synchronizing marketing efforts Updating delivered value Customer Acquisition, Retention and Growth Dell has involved the Internet in all aspects of customer relationships, ranging from customer acquisition, retention and growth to marketing. The internet is used in supporting existing channels such as the direct sales force and call centers by providing them with real time information and automating their routine tasks. It has also developed self-service tools for customers, using which they can order online, track order status or solve a technical problem through the Internet or an extranet. Acquisition Dell sells its own products at the dell.com website. On the homepage, customers in the U.S. are segmented into home and home office, medium and large organizations, Internet providers, health care businesses, federal government, state and local government, and education. Each customer segment has a different mix of products and services available. Customers can choose and price different configurations with Dells online configurator. Once they are ready to buy, their order is sent to a shopping cart. They can also choose various addons such as software, peripherals, digital cameras, PDAs, etc. on the Gigabuys or DellWare sites and add those to the same shopping cart. Once an order is entered, the customer receives an order number that can be used to track order status until it is delivered. Premier Pages are customized for every customer and they include capabilities for procurement, asset management, software upgrading, and even technical support. Large relationship customers can have Premier Pages customized even further to link to their own internal procurement systems, allowing their orders to be sent directly from the customers office information systems to Dells order management system. Dells account teams work with such customers to set up Premier Pages, setting access levels and registering user names and passwords for employees, and customizing the information and the kind of services that will be available. Dell also provides a few tools for customers to create their own pages. The various services available through Premier Pages include: _ Purchase history reports: The complete history of a customers purchases from Dell, including PO number, order number, date, SKUs, quantity, shipment dates. _ Standard configurations: To make a customers PC administration processes simpler (installation, upgrades, help desk, technical support), the customer can specify a definite set of configurations for different employees. These are made available for ordering on the customers Premier Pages at the price negotiated between Dell and the customer. _ Paperless online purchase orders: Dell and the customers sign a legal agreement that allows the customer to place orders without mailing or faxing a signed purchase order. This lets the entire ordering process, from configuration to payment, to be done online, saving time for the customer. _ ImageWatch: A roadmap of future product release plans made available to large enterprise customers to help them plan their own IT strategies. Dell relaunched its Premier Pages as DellPremier.com in September 2000 in the U.S with a new look and better navigation tools. Retention and Growth Service and support are normally quite an expensive and labor-intensive activity for PC companies, which need to provide technical support for complicated systems with a wide range of hardware and software configurations. Dell has an advantage here because most of its business is with large organizations that have their own MIS departments and technical help desks to support users. Home and small business support is usually provided directly to the end user, and costs more per PC to provide. Online support was originally developed by the Support Technology Online (STO) team, which grew up in the HSB (home and small business) segment as support.dell.com. In late 1999, Dell created separate STO groups for relationship and transaction customers, each part of those groups service organizations. Dell offers several service tools online. These are available online to home and small business customers at support.dell.com, and to relationship customers on the DellPremier.com extranet: _ Order status tracking Once an order is placed by the customers, they can track it until it is delivered. _ Resolution Assistant A software which is pre-loaded on a Dell PC that gathers information and sends it to a Dell technician when the customer faces a problem. The information is matched against an automated knowledge base. Whenever possible, a MAP, an executable module that automates resolution, is sent to the PC and the fix is done automatically. Resolution Assistant reduces the length of service calls and improves accuracy in diagnosis. _ Dell Knowledge Base A Dell database including product information, frequently asked questions, third party knowledge and other relevant documents specific to a particular Dell product. _ Ask Dudley A natural language searchable database of technical information which uses a customized version of the Ask-Jeeves search engine. _ File Library Downloadable drivers, utilities and other updates for Dell PC systems. _ Dell Software Tips -A library of hints and tips for operating systems and office applications. _ Pro-active services Pro-active notification services on warranty status, system age related information, file drivers, and the order status. _ Dell Talk-a monitored community forum for Dell customers to share information. Dell has built a community where its customers and loyalists can help each other with technical problems and questions. Dell doesnt censor the discussion on the forum, but monitors it regularly to ensure accuracy. If any user gives out incorrect information, Dell intervenes with the correct information. The users of this service are almost equally divided between relationship and transaction customers. With the launch of Dell Premier Support.dell.com in September 2000, Dell renamed its Help Tech service as Premier Support for relationship customers. Technical Support for corporate and public sector clients is handled by the Relationship Support Technology Online (STO) group. The primary customers for the Relationship STO are those individuals that support the end users belonging to corporate and public sector. This includes the personnel from help desks, MIS departments, IT professionals and technicians. Dells relationship customers have access to all of the online tools available to HSB customers, and also have customized applications relevant to their account for multiple systems and platforms. Unlike individual users, help desks and MIS organizations must deal with many systems, and with specific problems that arise from networking and client-server environments. For some large accounts, Dell itself may act as the help desk function for Dell equipment, as Dells technicians and o nline offerings have rich experience in troubleshooting and diagnosing system issues. Recently in February 2008, Dell launched its ProSupport portfolio of services. In this new framework, customers are able to self-identify the type of customer they are end users of IT professionals. Once the customers have self-identified, they are able to choose the features they need in the support package, thus customizing the support experience to their specific needs. The customer profile and history is very important in providing service and support. If the user enters a customer number or system identification number, he or she can get a personal support site that has the machine configuration and the history of what has happened with that machine since it was bought. The support strategy is based on what Dell calls virtual integration- getting customers closer to the knowledge, and inside out/outside in-giving the internal technicians the same set of tools and knowledge content as the outside customer. Dell gives customers a choice of venues for support, including phone and online support. They like people to use the web, but dont force them to. The breakdown of help incidents for HSB customers as of mid-2000 was as follows: _ 37% of incidents use the web alone for support _ 13% use both web and phone _ About 50% use the phone alone Dell finds that people who buy a PC online are more likely to get service and support there, while people who buy by phone will use phone service. Synchronizing Marketing Efforts The sales and marketing efforts of Dell are organized around the evolving needs of its customers. Its direct business model provides direct communication with its customers allowing it to refine its products and marketing programs for specific customer groups. Customers may offer suggestions for current and future Dell products, services, and operations on an interactive portion of its website called Dell IdeaStorm. This constant flow of communication allows Dell to rapidly gauge customer satisfaction and target new or existing products. For instance, Dell used a concept called free-range marketing  [3]  : allowing the community to drive the excitement and story about the new product, to create a buzz in social media using blogs, forums, communities etc. for the launch of their Inspiron 910 in September 2008. Updating Customer Value Dell interacts with more than 3 million customers every day, so it made sense for it to create a community to capture feedback from both customers and its 80,000 employees. Dell launched IdeaStorm, an interactive portal, to let customers share ideas that influence product development, services, and operations. Within the first week, IdeaStorm had collected more than 500 ideas; within the first month, it had 2,500 ideas.  [4]  Customer feedback on IdeaStorm led the company to build select consumer notebooks and desktops preinstalled with the Linux platform. Dell also decided to continue offering Windows XP as a preinstalled operating system option in response to customer requests. Dell also launched EmployeeStorm, a secure community employees can use to post ideas regardless of their position within the company. In the first 2 weeks, the company gathered more than 700 ideas. EmployeeStorm breaks down the silos typical in corporate life and increases collaboration Sustaining Customers through Connected Relationships Value Chain Dells core value chain for its PC business is different from that of a traditional value chain. Like others, it concentrated on building and selling PC systems, relying on others to supply components, software and services. However, it sold directly to the end user, cutting out the distributor and reseller. (Figures 2 and 3) Suppliers PC Maker Distributors Retailers, Resellers, Integrators Final Customer Figure 2: Indirect PC Value Chain Suppliers Dell Final Customer Figure 3: Dells Direct PC Value Chain However, with the expansion of Dell beyond selling simple PCs, its simple value chain has evolved into a new model that we call the value web or the virtual corporation. Value Web Figure 4: Dells Value Web: A virtual company There are three key aspects of the value web model of Dell: Dells central role in coordination and control of the value network, which is a result of its direct relationship with its end user. Being in direct touch with the customer requirements, Dell controls the flow of information to its business partners who provide the actual service. As shown in Figure 4, all the information flows are channeled through Dell. The close physical integration of Dell with its business partners and suppliers. The suppliers are normally located close to the plant and their personnel are located on the plant floor ordering material from their warehouse, based on information on Dells extranet. Such integration of material and information flow reduces inventory costs and creates an efficient supply chain, ultimately benefiting the end customer in the form of lower prices. The importance of internet and other electronic communications in allowing Dell to coordinate the web of close relationships through a constant flow of information between Dell and its partners. For example, if a customers hard drive crashes, the information travels from Dell technical support into Dells internal service and support systems. A new hard drive is ordered and dispatched to a Dell service provider, which sends a service engineer to install the drive. The information about the drive that crashed enters Dells databases and is conveyed to the supplier and plant that provided it for corrective actions. Customer Satisfaction For well-designed e-commerce services, the cost savings are not necessarily thought to go along with customer satisfaction. However, Dell has demonstrated that not only does it save money by selling directly on Internet, but also satisfies its customers better than any other sales model. Many business customers of Dell see Premier.Dell.com as a valuable management tool, helping their purchasing and IT departments to control purchasing decisions and enforce technology standards. Some customers (like Boeing) have integrated the Dell.Premier.com with their own ERP systems to allow online purchasing, making the ordering process much easier and more efficient for them. Not just purchasing, but also financial and IT departments of the customers benefit from Dells ability to provide a history of their purchases from Dell. All such benefits lead to better satisfaction among Dels core customer group of large business enterprises. While it is difficult to relate customer loyalty and repeat sales directly to the Internet and ecommerce, there is strong evidence that the Dell Premier.com services are a factor in helping Dell gain repeat business and achieve sole supplier status with some large customers. Some of this is from the convenience provided by Premier services and some from customer lock-in created by the electronic linkage of business processes between Dell and its customers. In a 2007 survey, Forrester  [5]  asked 565 PC decision-makers at North American and European enterprises about their satisfaction with their primary PC supplier on various parameters. The performance of Dell and its main competitors on these parameters is shown below: Dell HP Lenovo Overall Product features 44% 38% 46% 43% Product quality 51% 49% 59% 52% Price 43% 38% 33% 40% Product support 46% 31% 46% 43% Business relationship 37% 27% 45% 37% Repeat purchase of desktops 86% 74% 71% -NA- Repeat purchase of laptops 89% 75% 75% -NA- From the table, it is quite evident that Dell leads the industry on Price and Product support. It is rated on par with Lenovo on Product features and Product quality, however, it lags behind Lenovo on the key parameter of business relationship. The survey found that the most likely reason for this is a lack of communication, combined with rotating account representatives. Another reason was the absence of a product roadmap which would help the customer managers to prepare their corporate IT environment for the next few years. However, Dell scores very highly on a critical indicator of customer satisfaction i.e. a repeat purchase. The enterprise buyers gave big thumbs up to Dell on this front, with 86% ready to repeat purchase of desktops and 89% for laptops. CONCLUSIONS Dell has performed admirably on its efforts towards ongoing Customer Relationship Management. It has developed efficient systems and processes for customer acquisition, retention and growth, using online tools such as Premier.Dell.com, ProSupport and IdeaStorm. Therefore, many of the concepts discussed by Anderson and Narus in Business Market Management are substantially demonstrated in the case study of Dells CRM process. There are many lessons learned from Dells experience. These lessons can be transferred to other companies in the industry. Ensure better customer service is offered. Dell has become an industry leader in service and reliability. Dell has used CRM to its advantage. This has instilled trust into their customers. By custom-building a computer that the customer desires, this has created a very strong relationship with the customers. Implement technology in a phased fashion Dell tested key tasks in each of its regions prior to deployment. It set-up mock environments to develop, test, and support the i2 systems in patches without disrupting the live version. Dell was able to bring on one piece of the i2 system at a time. As one part became more efficient, then Dell added other components in stages. Dell ensured that each stage of the process performed well and allowed for future growth before rolling out the entire system. This minimized the risk, while at the same time increasing efficiency. Extend the connection from the customer to the supplier Dell was able to extend its build-to-order model from suppliers to the customer while continuing to maximize operational efficiency and customer satisfaction. Customers were able to save money while being able to purchase a customized machine because Dell passed on the savings, which resulted from efficient inventory management, no excess inventory or inventory shortages. It was able to share, in real-time, information with suppliers about customer demands and buying patterns.

J.M. Coetzee’s Disgrace: Post-Apartheid South Africa Essay -- South Afr

Through the perspective of an unconventional college professor, J.M. Coetzee’s Disgrace addresses the transition into post-apartheid South Africa, societal acceptance and rape through David Lurie and Lucy Lurie’s complex father-daughter relationship. While living in his daughter’s countryside home, David Lurie’s experiences reveal that despite the powerful political reform, crime continues to dominate the African people. Aspects of South African history are used to emphasize racial tension and the shift from a white to a black dominated South Africa. Coetzee also suggests the instability of the African society through constantly depicting his characters as emotionally unable to adapt to adverse situations. Although David and Lucy were initially introduced as polar opposites, their value of privacy and refusal to endure public humiliation and shame draw a parallel between the predator and prey of the novel. David Lurie ultimately evolves from his sexual en counters with Soraya, Melanie and Bev Shaw by realizing the traumatizing implications of his actions after the Lucy’s rape. J.M. Coetzee, a white South African writer, was strongly influenced by his personal experiences while he witnessed the social barriers during the apartheid. As the novel begins, Coetzee describes the sexual relationship between the protagonist David Lurie and Soraya, a prostitute that David routinely indulged in every Thursday. â€Å"For a man of his age, fifty- two, divorced, he has, to his mind, solved the problem of sex rather well† (Coetzee 1). In his mind, however, he did not put into perspective the thoughts of Soraya. He satisfied his desires at the expense of another’s emotional wellbeing. Despite Soraya’s acceptance of prostitution, her reaction towar... ...Originally, David uses his status as a white male in South Africa as his leverage and source of power, however, this tactic quickly fails and causes him to seek a new lifestyle. Lucy’s farm life introduces David not only to natural beauties but the strength people have to provide the services that they do such as managing a last resort animal aid center. By the end of his experiences, he learns that he does not belong in the environment that he used to surround himself with in the city, but that he enjoys himself when he has the company of animals and his daughter. His shift in standards of living and customs demonstrates the racial impacts of the apartheid. The connection between Lucy’s disgrace as the victim and David’s shame as the rapist demonstrates hardships both flaws. Each aspect of these flaws represents the difficulties of the apartheid in South Africa.

Rhetorical Analysis of “Pink Think”

Women have been told what to do since the beginning of time. â€Å"Pink Think† furthers that idea. This article by Lynn Peril explains what influences have impacted the way females act and think. Emotional appeal, the use of the theory pink think and her use of specific examples from history all come together to establish her case that women have been expected to fit into a specific mold in order to be a successful woman in life. Every woman feels the need to fit in with society. By fitting in, the woman would get the perfect guy, be successful in life and feel included.Lynn Peril shows how the attitude of Pink think made women feel the need to fit in. There were articles that showed the joys of housewifery. Women who read these articles felt that if they were a housewife and enjoyed the aspects of it written in the article, they fit in. It is a trait in women that all women want to fit in. We look in magazines and wish to look and dress like the models. This was what women th ought about Pink think. It was the â€Å"in† way to act and think. Women who thought this way fit in and those who did no wanted to so that they could fit in.Lynn Peril shows how Pink think made women want to fit in, and it worked. The theory of Pink Think is a set of ideas and attitudes about what constitutes proper female behavior. It was very popular from the 1940s to the 1970s. The theory of Pink think is the main argument of this essay. The cultural mindset of Pink think touched every female. The women read about it in articles, teens learned about it in their home economics textbooks, and little girls learned the feminine behaviors in games such as Miss. Popularity. With all the aspects of a woman’s life having some type of Pink think, it is no wonder women felt the need to fit into this mold. Pink think also told women that femininity was the only way to get and marry a man. And that was the only way to have a child, which was what women were supposed to do. Pink think also â€Å"made beauty, charm, and submissive behavior of mandatory importance to women of all ages in order to win a man’s attention and hold his interest after marriage. † It made women believe the only thing to do in life was to please a man.Pink think took over the way women act and thought in order to fit into what society thought a woman should be like. The use of specific examples in â€Å"Pink Think† helped Lynn Peril show that this theory influenced women in any stage of their life. Pink think influenced women from the way they put on their bathing suit to the choice of contraception. The example that had a real influence on me was the Miss America competition of 1961. Nancy Fleming’s answer to just kick both of her heals off and continue down the runway was a good one, but her answer that too many women were working and they should just be at home was shocking. Also the fact that she won after that answer really surprised me. Fleming was p utting women throughout the country down and saying they should just stay at home and have no place in the workforce. Women should have the choice to work or stay at home. I do not think the role model for America should have told the world that women are over powering men and her place is in the home. Peril’s use of several specific examples allows her to connect to deferent readers. By having several examples, Lynn Peril expands the audience that she affects.By using emotional appeal, the use of Pink think, and several specific examples Lynn Peril shows readers how women were influenced to act and think a certain way. Some of these attitudes are still looming around today. Just because Pink think was popular from 1940-1970, does not mean the idea does not show up today. Women are still expected to act and think a certain way. Lynn Peril showed how women were supposed to act back then, and it has changed in present day, but some ideas are still around.
